Entrance exams are separate from school qualifications and reward a different kind of thinking: speed, unfamiliar problems, and reasoning without being told which method to use. Cookie Tutoring treats them as subjects in their own right, so you can find a tutor who sat the specific test rather than one willing to have a go at it.
We also build cookie, the revision app, and every student and every tutor here gets it at no extra cost. This is what it has to use between lessons.
Medicine and dentistry: the UCAT. Law: the LNAT. Maths, Computer Science and several Economics courses: the TMUA. Physics, Engineering and Natural Sciences: the ESAT. Cambridge Maths and Imperial: STEP, usually as a condition of the offer rather than before it. Oxford’s PPE, Economics & Management, Human Sciences and History & Politics: the TARA.
Independent school entry at 11+ or 13+ is a different world again, with GL, CEM, the ISEB Common Pre-Test and individual schools’ own papers.
The BMAT was last sat in October 2023 and is discontinued; the medical schools that used it moved to the UCAT. Oxford’s MAT and PAT were last sat in October 2025, and from 2027 entry Oxford uses the TMUA in place of the MAT, the ESAT in place of the PAT, and the TARA in place of the TSA.
If a school or an older guide has told a student to prepare for the MAT, the PAT, the BMAT or the TSA, the replacement is the thing to book. The reasoning they tested has not gone anywhere; the paper has.
Almost none of it is new content. These tests use material a strong A-Level student already has, and ask for it under time pressure, in unfamiliar dress, without signposting the method. Preparation is therefore mostly volume of unfamiliar problems, done under timed conditions, with somebody who can explain why an approach that failed felt reasonable.
That last part is why a tutor who sat the test is worth more here than in almost any other subject: the useful feedback is about the choice made in the first thirty seconds.
For a test sat in Year 13, the summer between Year 12 and Year 13 is the normal start. Starting in October of Year 13 is late but not hopeless, and the work becomes narrower and more intensive.
No. It was last sat in October 2023 and is discontinued. Medical schools that used it now use the UCAT.
Oxford’s Mathematics Admissions Test and Physics Aptitude Test were last sat in October 2025. From 2027 entry Oxford uses the TMUA and the ESAT instead, and both are covered here.
Frequently. University interview preparation is a separate subject on a tutor profile, so you can see who does both.
Fewer than for a school subject, and spread further apart, because the work between sessions is the preparation. A common pattern is a lesson a fortnight over a few months, with timed practice in between.
From £30 an hour, set by each tutor. Specialist tests generally sit above the floor. The first 15 minutes is free.
We are selective about who teaches here: we look for tutors at top universities, everybody is interviewed by us, and nobody is listed without a criminal record check on file. Lessons run in the browser with live video and a shared whiteboard.Rates start at £30 an hour, the first 15 minutes with any tutor is free, and every student gets cookie's study software at no extra cost.
