11+ tutors for Essex
Most Essex and Southend grammar schools use the CSSE test, set by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex: one English paper and one maths paper, weighted equally, with no reasoning papers. A tutor works online, one to one, on comprehension, writing and maths at the level the test needs.

The test
The CSSE test is two papers, English and maths, each worth half the marks, with time to read the English paper first. There are no verbal or non-verbal reasoning papers, so preparation is about the English and maths themselves, including the writing in the English paper.
How a place is decided
Each school uses its own admissions policy with a minimum score and rank, and CSSE says the actual cut-off scores are known only after national offer day in March. A high score makes a child eligible rather than guaranteeing a place.
How lessons work for a child this age
Lessons are online, in the browser, with a shared whiteboard a child can write and draw on, so the tutor does not need to live nearby. A child under 13 has lessons through an account a parent or guardian sets up; the parent books and pays, and can read every message between the child and the tutor.

The consortium’s grammar schools in Essex and Southend, which CSSE lists in its information guide each year.

How much does an 11+ tutor for Essex cost?
From £30 an hour, set by each tutor and shown on their profile. Most tutors offer a free 15-minute intro, and their profile says so.
What happens in a lesson?
A lesson is live and one to one, in a room in your browser: video both ways, a shared whiteboard with proper maths notation, a graph plotter and screen sharing, on a laptop, tablet or phone with nothing to install. The tutor can put questions, notes and past papers on the board, and you can photograph your written work with your phone to put it there. The board is kept for 365 days, so either of you can open it again, print it or make notes, flashcards or questions from it, and the tutor writes a short report afterwards.
